Default Air Condition Questions

The AC in my 76 L48 hasn't worked since I've owned it. Is there a way to tell if your AC system has been converted from R12 to the newer system? I'd like to get the system working so my wife would enjoy riding in the car without worrying about how her hair looks when we get to where we're going. Any help appreciated.

Usually there are Schrader valve changes and a sticker denoting the change to R134a. Take it to any automotive AC shop and have them look it over.

First thing to look for is the fittings on the high and low side. The R-134a fittings use a push on style fitting vs. R-12 were screw on. But that's only a visual indication. It's always possible the fittings were removed since they're really just adapters to go from one style to the other.

There are plenty of posts here which pictures that can show you what i'm talking about.

If the system is bone dry empty with nothing to recover then I don't think that even an AC shop can tell which "R" type was in previously. If no one knows then you are better off flushing everything (except compressor - just drain it) and starting over with whichever "R" you want to go with.
I would stick with R12 if you can afford it.
