replacing 1974 rear end with a 1979 rear end bolts that hold spring to rear are 5/8'' on 1974 rear and 7/16'' on 1979 rear is that ok or do i need to put back plate off 1974 on tks hammerhead12747

If you are running the original rear cover then use the original bolts, if you are running the cover for the 1979 then you'll have some issues because the cover changed in 1978. GM changed the design and the part number was 464909. When they changed this they changed the bolts and the bolt spacing which required you to add 2 spacer plates as shown below.

So.. If I were you I'd run the original cover with your new rear end.
