Default carter carb ? ncrs

I am doing frame off restoration on a 1970 4 speed 350/300 hp, matching numbers car. I was checking the carb and it said carter Q- jet. Now i also thought carter made carburetor's for Rochester. The number on the carb is 7042203. So is this the correct carburetor for my year car.

While a Carter carb is accurate, the part # should be 7040203 for a 1970, 7042203 would be correct for a 1972.

Thank you, I better find the correct carb. Where would be the best place to find one?

Unless you are going for NCRS judging the carb doesn't really matter. Even at NCRS judging, the point loss isn't much.

Finding the correct carb and one with the correct date code based on when your car was built can get tricky. Ebay, internet, etc.. Unless you luck into one, the price for NCRS points can get very expensive.

If you are going the NCRS route, you should probably already have the AIM and 1970-72 Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide (TIMJG) which would have answered your original question.

Thanks, i did find it in the manual, but wanted confirmation. So i could put a Holly carb on the car with a small points loss and gain better performance?

No and No.

Because the car originally came with a Quadrajet, the NCRS wants to see a Quadrajet on it, even if not 100% correct. You will lose even more points with a Holley.

A Holley will not give any better performance. A properly tuned car & Quadrajet is all that you need.

Colo, if you go to the NCRS site you can also pull down the actual scoring sheets. That will help you understand how many points are assigned to each item. It would also make sense for you to take the judging guide and score your car yourself . That way you know where your strengths and weaknesses are and when combined with the judging sheet where you might want to spend your money. I also advise having your car judged as soon as possible so that NCRS can give you a baseline, unless you are hoping to achieve an award that has a time restriction. The judging fee is nominal. There is nothing like having eight Corvette experts pouring (so?) over your car.

My car has the body off the frame. I am doing a complete rebuild, the car had been sitting since 1978. As of today the only part that don't match number are, carb, starter, distributor, all other parts numbers match. Thanks, i will go to NCRS for the sheet.

Sounds great! When I had my car judged to learn what was right and not, I learned a few things I didn't know. For example, the following things are not original; I am slowing replacing them: radiator, radiator shroud bracket, bumper fasteners, convertible top, alternator, carburetor, driver mirror (both), passenger mirror (obviously as this car did not come equipped with a passenger mirror, valve covers, driver headlamp bezel, battery cables, and oil fill cap. Good luck and have fun.
