I have some vibrations while driving. I don't have a speedo working right now but it starts vibrating at 2000rpm, goes away at 3000 and comes back at about 3500. If I put in the clutch at spped, it goes away.
I would probably lean towards a bad u joint, either on the half shafts or drive shaft. Pushing in the clutch would take torque or pressure off of these and they might return to a "normal" in-line position.
I have a vibration that starts at about 2200 and goes away at 2500 then comes back alot stronger at 3200 in high gear. It is not related to rpm but mph. I tried everything and finally checked the alignment of the driveline with a string and found the rear end pointed more towards the passengers front tire then towards the motor.
I intend to borrow a digital camera tonight and post tomorrow with an explaination, what I did about it and pictures.
Norval:
PLEASE do that! I saw a post a few weeks ago that may have been yours on this subject. Sounds to me like you may be on to the cause of a lot of our collective vibrations. I'm going to be installing a 5-speed and reworking my rear end this winter, and I guarantee I will be checking the alignment based on your experience. Thanks.
Norval, you and I have talked about this before...
I've been chasing a vibration for 3 years or so. I finally checked the U-Joint angles ( it's f-ing near impossible with the body on ) and decided that the angles were OK up and down but off some left to right. I ended up moving the trans 1/2 to 3/4 inch towards the driverside.
The Vibrations are ALMOST gone, I can feel them a little at 4000 rpm and up WOT in third. But it's a LOT better!
I think this is a manufacturing defect in C3's.
Or maybe it's how the rear end is installed? That COULD be a critical alignment...
