Default Hurst Shifter

Bought a used hurst shifter but can't get it to connect with the reverse lever to get into reverse gear. Been a long time since I had a hurst shifter so not sure if there is something that has to be done to engage reverse using a hurst. Forward gear engagement works fine. Hopefully something simple I'm not doing.

Yes it did. They are adjustable like the stock shifter rods are. I haven't mounted it in the car yet. Trying it out while mounted in a vise on the bench. Used an alignment bolt to line up the arms but for some reason don't want to go over far enough to engage reverse lever. Just figure I'm not doing something right when trying to engage reverse.

Reverse on the shifter has a spring loaded lockout to prevent going into reverse by mistake. On my shifter, I need to slap the shift handle firmly to the left to get into reverse rather than first. Not sure from your post if you have the shifter mounted on your transmission or if you are testing it held in a vice. Not sure if you can properly check reverse in a vice.

Assuming that the transmission is on the bench as well.

What transmission?

Hurst made different install kits (with different rods) for Borg Warner T-10, Muncie, etc that all used the same shifter. Since this is a used shifter, it may have come with the wrong rods. Don't forget that Chevrolet sometimes used the T-10 and Muncie in the same year depending if you got the wide ratio or close ratio transmission.

Sounds like you know what you are doing with the alignment rod. Make sure that the shifter is locked in neutral using the alignment rod and that all the arms on the transmission are in neutral. At that point it just becomes a rod issue.

Did you get all the rods and shifter arms (that install on transmission)?

You have it mounted in a vice?
Is the vice preventing the rod that extends outside the housing from moving when put in reverse?
There's a rod that extends out the right side when you pull it into reverse.

When you get the transmission installed you will have the same issue. You need to move the lever firmly left to engage the lockout spring to allow the shifter to go into reverse. As I mentioned in my post, I slap the shifter lever to make sure I get reverse instead of first.
