Default Battery or alternator?

getting cold in Utah, start the 1982 C3 up and half the time the battery light comes on for few mins. Noticed this morning when I turn the head lights on, all the center panel gages drop to zero... turn the lights off everything returns to normal.. guess a quick trip to a auto parts store could tell me.. Any other suggestions?

It could be a grossly loose alternator belt or a bad rectifier and both can be fixed with simple hand tools and a bit of knowledge.

Most of the auto parts places will test alternators and batteries for free. Might as well let them do it since you may need one or the other while you're there.
