Default 1980 Vette engine # confusion

I would like to know if the engine in my car (only 30000 miles) is the original engine. I read on here about two set of numbers. My engine has only one set of numbers with no letters. The numbers are as follows: 28371
Any help would be appreciated. Dennis

Is that number stamped onto the 3/4" X 3" pad right in front of the right cylinder head? If so it's way too short to be the serial number.

Yes to the placement of the numbers. That is the only numbers there. I thought someone would know what they meant. Warranty? Or replacement engine for any other reason.

Do those numbers match any part of the end of your vin?
Maybe post a photo of the pad.

Numbers do not match any number in VIN. No photo needed, there are no other numbers. This is not a big deal was just curious if anyone knew or had seen an engine numbered like this.

Those are not factory engine ID numbers.

Might be a machine shop work order number added after the block was re-machined but thats just a guess. If we could see them it would help.

Can you see that while the engine is in the car? I have a borescope if I can get it in there.
