Cost depends on the brand you choose - Hookers and OBX are similar in looks and style, but OBX is less costly - If you like the looks, I say go for it.
Patriot style pipes look different and are usually pretty reasonable.
I have seen the chrome Hookers new for around 1400-1500 for the complete set; OBX in the ballpark of 800-900; Patriot less than that.
As with anything, its really your call, only you can decide. But I feel I have to say I disagree that they belong only on chrome bumper cars - I'm running Hooker stainless steel on mine. While it's not a convertible, it is a late "rubber bumper" body style - and I love the look:

I think side pipes might clean up the look of the back end, as well.
