Default Pulley Alignment

75 Coupe

Original motor NLA - current motor 1980 Z28 - very similar motor.

Anyway, the crank pulley and the water pump pulley don't seem to line up as much as I'd like. See photo.

As it is, I'm having to shim out the AC compressor and it's still a bit off.

Generator seems to be closest to true.

Power steering is the worst.

It looks to me that the pulley on the water pump is just wrong????

Anyway, curious if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks,

Len

Post some pulley numbers for the pulleys you have installed. Then we can try to assist. Is that the original water pump that you are using? OR, did you get something new?
Do you have power steering? Take a picture of that view also.

You may have to modify the a/c compressor mounting since it looks aftermarket.... I had to modify mine.

Anyway, get those pulley part numbers for the crank, water pump, and alternator and post those.

Pulley alignment problems are often caused by the positioning of the flange on the water pump shaft. I have seen the position of the flanges vary by plus or minus 1/8" depending on who makes the water pump. But v-belts have no problem dealing with misalignment's so it's not a problem. If it really bothers you you can press your flange on another 1/8" or so but you'll have to take the cover plate off and support the end of the shaft on the impeller end before doing any pressing.

There is also the possibility the previous owner put a spacer behind the water pump pulley. Spacers come in 1/8" increments to correct alignment problems and are available from many vendors.
