how about the whole setup,,,,my terminology is wrong i think,,,,i meant how can i test my vac advance distributer to be sure she is working 100%,,,i know the dist is working good but the advancing part im not to sure about
put a new one on...if your pressing the gas pedal down considerably less during acceleration then your problem is fixed. Get the right one though, not all advance units are calibrated the same. If not your car is more than likely to ping.
but........thats what im trying to get around "buying a new tach"......anyone know of a way to test them.........it all seems loose and free moving but i have heard some people say theirs were free moving and they bought a new tach and the new tach made a world of difference.
You can use a vacuum pump and a gauge to see how many hg" it take to start moving and how many it takes to get full travel. Of course you need to know what it is designed to do.
LArs had put together a paper on distributors and vacuum advance with a lisitng of numbers by application. I believe it is posted on the forum here. Try doing a search on distributors. I will look to see if I still have it on my computer
By using a timming liight with the adjustable dial you can chart what your current advance curve is. By setting the accelerator at different rpm's and checking to se where the timming is. Do both with and without the vacuum hooked up. Compare your findings to the specs in any good repair manual will give you a good idea as to what is working and what isn't.
Won't your vacuum readings differ between Park vs. Drive?
Isn't this why your vac secondaries never open in your garage?
It seems like you would have to know the Hg when your vacuum advance kicks in (vacuum canister test previously mentioned) and the Hg under normal driving conditions and compare the two.
