Again, thanks to all for the help- it's much appreciated. I've been so busy researching and making choices on parts with my builder that it's been hard to get on the forum and do individual replies. I'm still considering all options.

By the time the gases reach the muffs it's cooled down and reduced volume.

This is the direction I'm leaning. There's research that agrees with your last line. I just need to talk to my so-in-law when he gets back from celebrating his 2nd anniversary with my daughter. They're out of town on a well deserved break. Thanks.

I modded my stock cross member for my pass under 3 inch pipes straight back from the header collectors 20 years ago.

You only need oval pipe when you get up to the 4 inch systems with a lowered pro street setup

George, my daughter and SIL are celebrating their anniversary in your town right now. If you treat them to the nicest dinner in town I'll pay you back....I promise.

Send me a pm I've been to every one of the best dining places in the Tahoe / Reno area. I'm not sure how that would work on making reservations and if they would take a credit card to pick up the whole tab over the phone

That's very kind of you to offer, George. I was kind of teasing with the part about paying you back, but your offer is much appreciated. They actually had a great dinner last night at a steak house, and I think they head home today.

1 7/8" primary on the Kooks headers, into 3" mandrel bend pipe, with X-pipe) to 3" in (X 2) 2 1/2" out Borla mufflers

My 2 sons fabricated the system in one of our garages.

I put 2.5 on my 79 with a 11:1 406 and fast burn heads with 1 3/4 headers, I didnt want 3 because of clearance issue under the diff but wish I had done it now. If you have drone its the mufflers not the size of the pipe, my old set would give you a headache and it was 2.5 also.

I have Hooker Super Comps into a 3" mandrel X-pipe system i built laying on a creeper under my car on jack stands. I bought the bends, straights and X-pipe from Summit. I have 3" Thrush welded 2 chamber mufflers.

I used the BTO 700R4 pass under cross member. I found no problems with finding room for the 3" system. It has decent ground clearance, sounds awesome and lets my 406 perform to it's full potential.

By the way the way the Thrush mufflers are a great bargain. They were only $36 each from Summit. They sound and perform as well as mufflers costing a lot more money. In my 80 the only time I got any drone was when the engine was down under 1800 RPM where this engine shouldn't be at cruise anyway.

I see no reason not to go to a full 3" X-pipe system. You are right on the borderline for needing 3" now, if you decide to move up in power later, you already have the exhaust you need.
