502 crate engine in a 69?
is this a good choice? what are your thoughts on this?

Print out the prices that you find and take them to your local Chevrolet dealer. He should be able to get you a good price & you won't have to pay shipping.
My local dealer got the price down around $500 more then what I found online (I haven't bought it yet).
I think shipping alone would be around $1500---at least that is what I got for a quote for a BB from e-bray.

Does it fit directly in the engine bay? Can I use 454 PS pump brakets?
Is the engine block format the same as 454, or is it talldeck etc.. ?

Have you checked the FrankenRat project on Chevy HP Magazine, interesting. The base engine cost $4,402.13. Add a 800+ carb, Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, headers and you got 451HP/519lb-ft for about $5000.
