Has anyone read about the FrankenRat buildup in Chevy HP magazine? Does anyone of you have this 454 HO engine in the Corvette and if so, what do you think about it?
I have planned to buy the engine and in the first step add:
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake
Aluminium GM valve covers
MSD 8572 distributor and my existing MSD6AL box.
Existing headers and Holley 850DP
To get a reliable engine with fuel economy and 'enough' HP/TRQ for streetdriving (450HP/519lb-ft).
Is it anything special to think about when I shall fit the engine with my existing option?:
Boltpattern bellhouse
Flywheel manual
Starter
Boltpattern for PS-pump and generator
etc...
Sorry I can't help you with specific experience with that engine but it sounds like a nice combination that you have in mind. The bolt pattern for the bellhousing is the same as the older MK IV engines. I'm not sure about the flywheel.
The engine has broke and I must do a rebuild of it. I must buy a new valve train: cam, hyd.roller lifters, pushrods, valve springs etc. and new pistons, damper .... and take the engine to a machine shop...
When I saw this project, I thought that I got a brand new engine for nearly the same money, If I sell the parts from my existing one.
(~$6500 with shipping and Swedish taxes)
Of cource, I lose ~50HP, but I can forget the engine for a while (maybe...). I can drive longer distanses with a reliable and economic engine.
It's not easy to choose, but I think it's time to do it soon....
