All my combustion engines get Mobil 1 0W-40 European Formula only...this weight of Mobil 1 is a Group IV based synthetic, unlike the other weights of Mobil 1 that are called "synthetics".
We are in agreement on the use of the 0w40 oil. It's the only oil I use in the corvette.

However in my modern cars with VVT I use the recommended oil and weight. These engines use oil flow and pressure to vary the valve timing.
I can't say for certain but modifying the oil viscosity seems to me may also alter the response of the VVT system since it uses oil pressure and flow to vary said timing.

This what one fellow has to say about it;

I kinda wonder if these VVT systems are especially sensitive to SAE viscosity or not. Certainly the flow rate changes drastically with temperature but computer programming could account for these changes looking for a certain range of operation before utilizing the VVT during operation.

On your vehicles with VVT have you noted any difference in fuel economy or performance by using 0w40 vs perhaps a 0w20 or 5w20 oil recommended by the manufacturer?

On my Lexus IS 350 F sport and my wife's Audi Q3 both of which have VVT, I have noticed zero difference using the 0W-40 Mobil 1....
