Default Exhaust question

Looking around at several exhaust options and may switch to side mounts just to be easier. My problem is I have 69 big block 427/4 speed, hooker long tube headers and manga flow mufflers. I'd like a 2 1/2 (or 3" but can't find anyone making set) stainless pipes for headers back but cant seem to find any. Afraid if I take it to a muffler shop they'll charge a fortune for 'custom' pipes. Anyone have any luck out there with headers finding a good exhaust system? With an X pipe would be great also but that leads to my other problem. I just finished cutting and dabbing up the transmission crossmember so its now removable but if I go under exhaust and especially X pipe than I wont be able to unbolt it and slide the crossmember out of the way to lower tranny.

Which leads me full circle to why I'm thinking I could make life simplier and find a nice sounding side mount exhaust with good breathing performance for motor.

As always I appreciate anyone's thoughts. Especially anyone who's been down this same road before.

Well, Unfortunately, I feel your pain. I have a 73 big block with Hedman headers. Wanted a 3" stainless system and looked everywhere for what I thought would be an easy find. I never found what I wanted, so I purchased a 3" stainless Pipes wye, header back system and a couple of bends to build my own. After cutting up one of the Pipes tubes, I figured out that the 3" system was going to be VERY tight through the trans crossmember. I didn't want any rattles, so I purchased another 2.5" Pipes stainless system. Yeah, not ideal. That is what is looking like it will work without changing the trans crossmember. I have a 3" wye from Pipes in my garage that has never been used if you want it....

good luck

I am a huge fan of side pipes and can't ever imagine going back to a full length exhaust. Besides the fact that I love the way they look on C2 & C3s they make my life SOOO much easier when it comes to working on anything under or to the rear of the car. The trade off is the noise and the fact that I smell like exhaust fumes everywhere I go and the occasional passenger leg burn. 2 1/8" primaries into 4" collectors are suitable for most any combination you plan on putting in the car (may be a bit on the large side for most but it leave you room to grow into them). My vote is for side pipes.

I too am a huge fan of side pipes and most likely (never say never) won't go back to an under car exhaust system. Mine are Hooker 2 1/8" primaries into 4" collectors. Yes, they are noisy, smell like burnt exhaust and will produce scars on your legs if your not careful. So why bother with equipping your car with them? Cause they look fantastic!!!
