Default 79 L82 Blower Motor replacement

One annoying issue with this car is a noisy, noisy blower motor - sounds like the bearings are shot. I got the motor and a metal (!) squirrel cage from O'Reillys for less that $40 so that's one of the projects for this weekend. It does not seem like its going to be a walk in the park. There does not seem to be access from under the car and it looks like the overflow coolant tank will have to be drained and removed....

Removing the blower motor was not so bad - the A/C plumbing really gets in the way. I was able to remove the coolant reservoir tank; I then removed the ground and supply electrical wires, the tube and 5 screws. 4 of the screws you can see, the very bottom you cannot unless you use a mirror. Sliding it out of the engine compartment was tricky. The A/C lines block it and you have to work it.

The squirrel cage is plastic, as I expected, and broken in one place. The motor is definitely binding.

The new cage is slightly smaller than the original one

I notice the squirrel cage is a little bit shorter. probably to make reinstall easier.

Yes indeed! Just shorter enough to where it slides in nicely.

I used gasket maker to seal the motor from the housing and installed it. Not the cleanest install (should've used the black RTV but I only had the red one in the shop) but hey, I'd rather drive the car, not slave over it.

shorter is not better for blower wheels.. you might should have considered going to a C4 wheel while you had it out .. 30% bigger and 30% better airflow

Hi
did you notice less air same or more with new smaller metal fan? Of cours mine only blows on high and think a new motor may improve airflow as well.

The old one looks like a C4 style blower.... the newer one is the stock C3 style.
