There is a pad just in front of the right cylinder head that will have numbers stamp on it. The last 6 numbers of your serial number should match the numbers on that pad if you have the original engine.

A Vette was my second car, a white 1977 L48 that I bought 2 years ago, when I was 16. And yes, it will eaither teach you how to work on them or how to go broke... or both :) I put a lot of knuckle blood into that car until my brother totalled it.

So now I am working on my second '77 which I am sure will teach me much more (it is already costing me much more!). Good luck with that, this forum is a great place for information. Know that and you will be okay :)

Along with the last digits of your VIN number being stamped on the engine pad, there should also be three letters stamped there. The letters indicate the type of engine. They are as follows for a 1979 Corvette:

ZAA L48 manual trans, early production
ZAB L48 auto trans, early production
ZAC L48auto trans, Calif emissions, early production
ZAD L48 auto trans, high altitude
ZAF L48 manual trans
ZAH L48 auto trans
ZAJ L48 auto trans, Calif emissions
ZBA L82 manual trans
ZBB L82 auto trans

BTW, your profile says that you have a 1979 L82. Your posting just makes reference to a L48.

Good Luck

Basically, as long as the engine is a stock small-block Chevy, practically any headers made to fit that engine in a C3 Corvette will work...
