Spent the afternoon checking my bellhousing alignment on the new 427 small block. I'm out .006". Tremec says the allowable limit is .005" I need bellhousing dowels with an offset of .003" to make the correction but the smallest I can find is .007". Does anyone know where I can find .003" offset dowels?
Those are .007" offset dowels. The adjustment they refer to is just for direction. I am looking for .003" offset dowels.
I have been doing some reading, and its not clear that I am outside the allowable limit. Some of the sources I have been reading say that the runout is half the total deflection of the dial gauge. That would mean my runout is .003" and I am within the limit.
And to make matters even worse aluminum bell housings WILL flex when a load is imparted on them. So even though they may be aligned with the center line of the engine when installed they may be off a considerable amount once the heavy transmission gets hung on it and the transmission is set on the cross member. It's kind of a crap shoot.
Trying to read your numbers....but if the biggest difference from zero at 7-8 o'clock and .006" at 1-2 o'clock...then you are only off .003".
Are those all + numbers above zero? No negatives right?
JIM
No negative numbers. Didn't plan it that way. Its just the way it worked out. There is a total deflection of .006" in the dial indicator as it goes around the opening. From what I have read that means I am out .003" which is within spec.
Correct. If you were to set the dial indicator to .003 at the zero mark....and rotated it, it would go to zero over where the .003" marks are and then back to .003 at the .006 mark. For a total of .003' either way off center.
It would never be more than .003 from center which is OK.
