ive been reading about melonized gear on the distributor
some engines have roller rocker camshaft. how do i determine if i need a melonized distributor gear or not.

first off rockers, lifters, and cams are three separate items. Roller lifters means that they have a rolling wheel riding on the cam shaft. Roller rockers are a type of rocker.
99.999% of all distributers sold have melonized gear. Only billet steel cam shafts require an alterative gear

Most of the time the camshaft manufacturer will state whether or not they need a specific distributor gear.
For example, the current Comp retro roller cams are recommending a synthetic gear.
Most modern roller cams, unless they have a pressed on iron gear, need the melionized gear. Comp recommending synthetic probably needs the hard gear, but comp would rather you were a member of the distributor-gear-of-the-year club and didn't tear up their cams gears...
