Default msd 6520 digital 6 plus ignition control

I was wondering what consensus, if any, there is on the MSD 6520 6 plus ignition control module is. I have one new (or at least factory refurbished) from MSD in response to a warranty claim I submitted on an Accel 300 plus control module which I purchased in 2000. Yes, that's right. It had a lifetime warranty on it and it died after a couple hours running on my '80 vette which had been on a 14 year hiatus. It took a little negotiating but as MSD bought Accel, they honored the lifetime warranty and sent this unit. I'm not sure if I want to install it or look to trade it for a decent MSD or Mallory HEI distributor. Any opinion as to the true benefit of this for a mild street rod build would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If your HEI isn't giving you any problems I would continue to use it.

If your serious about tuning i.e. creating your own timing curve, then get a programmable ignition. It looks like it can be done with the MSD. Btw, Mallory was bought out by MSD.

It has a lot of desirable features built into the box... 2-step, start retard, rev limiter, separate retard for power adder...

I have run one for years on my C3 and have zero complaints.

Save the box and save your money for a MSD distributor to complement it.
The ability to set the mechanical advance amount and weight is an awesome thing. The two really go together.....set up hundreds in my life.....
You will not see much gain if you pair the box to an HEI. The HEI has a decent module and hot coil.

I have a Digital 6 Plus for my build too. Since my compression is so high, 11.8 to 1, I'm going to put the retard function on a switch so that if I get lousy gas, I can retard the timing a few degrees to prevent detonation with the flip of a switch.

Sounds like unless I really need the money I should just keep it in case I opt to use it down the road. Biggest problem I can see is where to put it. It's more than twice the size of the Accel 300+ Hopefully that extra size includes improved reliability. In all the years I owned the vette and through all trips big (round trips NY-PA many times,TX-NY, TX-FL) and small, it failed to get me home only once. And that was just around the block when the 300+ failed.
