Default Crankshaft dowel pin

The crankshaft in the 383 I am replacing has a dowel pin in the crankshaft flange that engages a hole in the flywheel. The Scat crank in the new 427 has the hole for the dowel but no pin. I looked at several of the engines in my collection and some have the pin, some don't. I'm assuming the pin needs to be there, but I can't seem to find a source for the dowel pin. Am I searching for the wrong term? Where can I get a new dowel pin?

You can get one from a crankshaft that is beyond turning. Any automotive machine shop should have several lying around.

Measure the hole size then go to McMaster Carr website or your local Ace Hardware, both will have what you need.

I doubt you could put crank on wrong. The 6 bolts only go in in 1 orientation. Wheel centers on crank hub. Dowel only provides a couple thousandths of left-right orientation. You can punch dowel out of your old crank if you don't wanna run around town for one. Or do without..

some stock chevy cranks have the dowel pin so you can't install the stock flywheel in the wrong orientation where the flywheel is part of the balance like a 400 chevy

Call Scat and see if they want the dowel pin installed. Maybe your crank is balanced for running without the pin and you would upset the balance if you used one.

you can't put the flywheel on wrong, dowel pin or not. it is not a round symmetrical bolt pattern.

While the pin may not be necessary, it does serve a purpose or it wouldn't be there.
I prefer to have it in place to prevent the flywheel from turning on the crank and placing unnecessary side load on the flywheel bolts.
Just the engineer in me- Your mileage may vary.

I had same issue. Not necessary especially on internal balanced. 0.02
