1979 corvette door hinge spring. Problem
I was attempting to install new door hinge spring after putting in new bushings and pins. I put the center of the spring into the groove and drop the top into the hole. My problem arises in that I can push the bottom part of the spring into the d slot without the tool, so there is no pressure on it and it rattles around loose and falls down again. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Check that the spring is the correct length as seen in Willcox's video.
