When did this door disappear and what was it actually? Was it the tray door or another door?Any pics?Should my -73 have one?
:yesnod: Just took mine out this summer. Open the hood and remove the plastic cover up near the inlet area of the hood. There is flapper and cylinoid under there. My cylinoid was not connected so my flapper never opened. Since I do not have the orig air cleaner not sure if I gained anything but is has to allow for air to flow through the cowl area without the flapper in there.
My '73' has one. When I got it it did not work. I just reconnected the power to the solenoid and it works great. The accelerator has to be fully depressed before it opens.

Your 73 should have one. The solenoid and door is part of the hood not the wiper tray. There is a switch at the top of the gas pedal that actuates the door. The switch shares the power circuit with the radio, I think. When the hood is open you should see a wire from the front of the hood to the cowl area of the hood on the drivers side of the car.
The switch at the accelerator pedal is actually the transmission kickdown switch. The cowl door is tied into that same switch. In theory, when the tranny kicks down, the door should open.
