jhopper,
If you have A/C the tranny cooler will fit right in front of the A/C condenser. Most rectangular coolers such as B&Ms are either 1 1/2" or 3/4" thick. You will need to go with the thinner unit to clear the open hood. Unless you live in the desert, B&M recommends running a line from tranny to radiator, then cooler and then return. The idea is to slightly warm the fluid first. Even todays modern cars and trucks by-pass the trans cooler until a certain temperture is met, then through the cooler.
The B&M unit comes with enough rubber hose and clamps to get the job done. You will have to fabricate a bracket to mount the cooler. All this can and should be done with the hood off.

here's where i mounted mine in my '72
doesn't interfere with the radiator, have added a couple of extra deflectors top n bottom to direct air thru it more.
have just recently replaced it with a taller one, had trans failure and was easier than cleaning the orig one out.
If do not drive in sub freezing weather, I would recommend not running the tranny cooler in conjunction with the radiator cooling. I have been using stand alone tranny coolers for 35 years in many cars and never have had a tranny failure and I drive a few in sub zero temps with stand alone coolers....no issues
I wish that I'd bought the one with the fans on it, sounds so much easier. My C5Z runs at a constant 165 / 170°. I'm also gonna put a temperature guage where the clock is. Thanks

I have never had any of my car's with tranny coolers doing all the cooling (not in line with the factory radiator cooler) ever get above 150 degree fluid temperature in any type of driving. Use the biggest GVW Double stack cooler you can fit (preferably over 24,000 GVW) and you will no issues and really do not need to monitor the tranny fluid temp. ( I check mine periodically with an infrared thermometer occasionally). I would put an 81/82 engine oil temp gauge in the pod where the clock is if you want to monitor the temp.
