Hello everyone, so I am looking into doing a t5 Chevy swap and I have read a lot of posts about the swap itself. My question is what is the best trans to look for meaning year, v8 vs v6. So far I have found a 89 Iroc trans that comes with bell housing flywheel ... etc the whole set up pretty much, but also I have found a 96 firebird V6 trans. Anyone has any suggestions on what is the better choice to go with or if there is even a better choice to go with other than T5. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Externally the Camara ones are all the same. The 87-92 are rated a little higher in torque they can handle. But Trans people say there is no real functional difference in strength between the world class and the older type.
It is easier to find mustang trannys. But they need a 200 buck adapter to fit chebby motors and 26 spline ford driveshaft. And there is no yoke in 26 spline ford that can be unbolted to remove u-joint. So you end up assembling the front u-joint in place on the car. Apparently not fun. The v6 Trans have too deep first gear. 3.75 to 4.0 means you are hitting second in 2 or 3 car lengths.
Great thank you for the feedback, I found an 89 Camaro IRocZ that I will be looking at it this weekend. The car was involved in a crash so the guy is parting it out. He s letting me take anything I want including flywheel, starter , slave cylinder. I am thinking of taking the pedals also maybe I can fit them. Is there anything else maybe I should take from the car since I get this opportunity?
All v8 camaro-firebird 92-older are cable speedo. If you have found an 89 T5, be sure it is a WC unit. Just cut it was in an 89 doesn't mean it didn't leave factory in an 85, or even a v6 car. Check tag number. If no tag verify front counter gear bearing and check gear ratio in 1st and 5th.

Will do I will be going there this saturday to check it out.
If that is the tag number, it is an 85 non-WC. How much he asking? A non-WC is a 300 dollar trans. The WC units are worth more, but only rated about 20 ft/lbs more torque. The trans builders I have spoken to say there is no real difference in what the trans will take, WC or NWC.

Ok, 85 Camaro NON world class. 85. I think that is the last of the 2-piece seal engines. Flywheel will work. I know of a 89-90 firebird trans. 500 plus shipping upstate new york. I got one shipped to me for 65 bucks ups ground. 80 lbs 200 miles. How do you drive? These are not bullet-proof. You dump clutch and see how far you can smoke tires in 2nd and 3rd any T5 will be in pieces on the street behind you. I don't think the angled bell housing is a great idea in corvettes though.
I agree, if you go down the T5 road, then the 176 is a good ratio transmission, and it is a WC transmission. The next best thing, with a 176 transmission, is a 3.70 or 4.11 rear.
That in my mind will be the best driveline.
