When I engage the clutch there is a clunk from the right rear. Sounds like a loose mount versus grinding gears. lifted up whole rear end and rechecked my work on rear leaf spring install, no problems, yokes seem solid no end play. Unable to duplicate sound with engine on in nuetral. Unwilling to safely be under car and engage clutch while trusting 2 jackstands versus my life. No idea what it is but it happens regardless of turning left/ right or going straight. As soon as I engage the clutch and the driveline takes the torque of the engine there is a clunk and no noticible hesitation. Any ideas?
David,
Look at the snubber bushing. It is the bushing that connects the rear end to the crossmember. When the drive line torques up if the bushing is worn it will clunk also as it raises up or down. Sometimes you can see the space with a flashlight or see it move when someone puts it in gear.

Nomad78SA hit the nail right on the head, if I read your symptoms right. Engaging the clutch (we are talking about as you let the clutch pedal out, right?) and either accelerating or decelerating cause the engine to torque or twist. That twisting moment is usually absorbed by the front differential snubber. This is a rubber doughnut with a steel insert, an "engine mount" for the differential, if you will. If the front bushing is worn, or even trashed, you will get a metal-to-metal clunk as the two pieces lift off of each other and then come back together. Do you have an Assembly Instruction Manual? It clearly shows the components, their order of assembly, and where they go on the differential.
This is an easy job, requiring basic tools, but it is also a PITA because of the tight quarters you have to work in. Anybody can do this and the parts are readily available at most catalog stores.
I have the entire Energy suspension kit sitting in the garage. Have used/ installed only the sway bars, pitman, drag link, rear spring ,tranny poly bushings so i should have the snubber bushing in the kit. I do not know which bushing it is, could you please specify it's location or does anyone have a digital picture.
P.S. going to check the drive shaft just in case becuase I did just put in the tranny bushing and had to jack up the tranny a few inches to leave enough space to pull and fit the new (unsquashed) bushing in, may have done something to the drive shaft universals.
Came home for lunch, not the driveshaft (as far as I can tell with car not jacked up), no time to jack up car yet but will check rear snubber this evening.
They are talking about the front of the pumpkin. the bracket attached to the rear end has this bushing to attach to the frame cross member. you can lie on the groung beside the car and have some one shif back and forth and see the front end of the diff jump up and down if it's loose, otherwise you will see nothing. The bushing is shown in most all the catalogs with the rear end components.
I agree with the others about the front differential mount, but in addition to the just checking the bushing also check the 3 bolts that hold the bracket to the differential (1 through bolt, and 2 smaller ones). The 2 smaller bolts came loose on my car and allowed the differential to move around when I accelerated & braked. It made a deep thumping sound in the rear of the car. Good Luck.
Okay not snubber bushing. Had no help so physically left a screwdriver to block carb at 1000 RPM so would not stall in first gear with no one at the gas pedal. Back end up on jacks and HOWL!!!! from right rear wheel. No one was available to check putting Vette in and out of gear so left it spin in 1st gear. Not the rear end but either the wheel bearing or universal connecting half shaft to right wheel bearing. Sounded like metal to metal contact, got louder and ran to shut off ignition, any ideas?
