You have to "pull a vacuum" on it first for at least 20 minutes with a HVAC vac pump.

r-12 can be found.
price can be high.
take the time to change all the seals, valves and drier.
then add proper oil type and amount.
pull a vacuum.
at least an hour.
wait to see if it holds.
add @ 4 pounds r-12.

or

buy parts to convert to 134a gas.
different oil. different amount.
and use @75-80 percent of 4 pounds gas.
