When you say the water ports are blocked off, do you mean a gasket is blocking or the intake manifold casting itself? That is known as the water cross-over passage.
(The ports in the center of the head are the heat (air) cross-over passage.)
On Edelbrocks, no, the rear water passage should not be blocked off. That rear passage connects the two banks of cylinders with coolant, circulation = balanced cooling.

where do you see a rear water passage? there is none.
Hello,
Just picked up on this thread.
I'm not sure what you meant by "companion cylinders".
The firing order is 1843 6572 so 5 & 7 are sequential the firing order.
It has been known for cross fire to happen as the leads run close to each other.
You stated "misfire" just confirming you don't mean "crossfire"
Are your plug leads correct on the Distributor?
Mitch
im not sure whats going on i smell it burning rich and when i take wires off of 5 or 8 it doesnt change the way it runs the others do

Sometimes you may think the plug wires are going in the correct orientation when in fact there is an error because it's hard to see them completely all the way to the plug. Seeing as the 2 cylinders that are causing the problem are directly across from each other on the distributor cap, try just switching those 2 wires at the cap and see if anything happens. They just might be wrong and it looks like they are correct. It's an easy change and if nothing happens you have nothing to lose and it's not going to hurt anything. Good luck.
