Default Spicer u joint size sanity check

I took the stock, original driveshaft out of my 77 to install a new set of Spicer solid u joints in place of the same joints in there now (call me paranoid). The new joints box says 5-1310X which I believe is correct.
Comparing the joint from the box to one still installed, it looks like the new joint is about 3/16 " shorter from cap to cap. The only explanation is that the caps, when installed in the driveshaft flange, don't sit as close to the center of the joint as they could possibly go. I never noticed this before. Does that seem right to you guys?

I believe the 1310 joint and the 1330 have the same diameter caps, but the 1330 is wider. Sounds like that's what you need.

Thanks guys. Well I checked the website and the 1330 joints measure 3.625 across the caps. Checking with a tape measure, my joints measure 3 5/8, or 3.625. I ordered 2 from Denny's Driveshaft at $17.50 each.
Thanks again.

So the u-joint size thing is taken care of. Now, sanity check? Here? You want the rest of us Corvette addicts to tell you you're not crazy? How about we just tell your wife it's a phase and you'll grow out of it?

A quick check to see what DS joint you have is to look at the pinion yoke. You don't even need tools. A 1310 yoke uses U-Bolts (63 Grand sport doesn't) & 1330 yoke uses straps and bolts.

Sounds like you bought the wrong ones for a 1977. Here is a list of u joint sizes and years applicable.

Halfshaft 1963-1979 all 1350
Halshaft 1980-1981 automatic 1330
Halshaft 1980-1981 4 speed 1350
Halfshaft 1982 1350
Driveshaft 1963-1967 all 1310
Driveshaft 1968-1970 4 speed 1310
Driveshaft 1968-1970 auto 1330
Driveshaft 1971-1979 all 1330
Driveshaft 1980-1982 rear u-joint 1310
Driveshaft 1980-1981 4 speed front 1330
Driveshaft 1980-1981 auto front 1310
Driveshaft 1982 front 1310

Yeah my wife has been waiting for me to grow out of this phase since I met her - about 40 years ago.

You're right as usual - straps and bolts on the pinion flange. Thanks.

Thanks for this info - very interesting. So I bought the right ones when I first put them in about 8 years ago. Somewhere along the line I got the wrong idea that all C3s were 1310 on the driveshaft. Live and relearn.

If your stuck, I have a 68 BB. If the above referenced chart is correct,
I should be able to use them on my drive shaft.
PM me.

I received the U joints from Bruce.
Very nice and smooth transaction.
Great communication super nice guy.
I would not hesitate to buy from him again in the future.
He got rid of something he couldn't use and I got a pair of U joints
that I can use.
Thanks to this forum this hobby remains fun.
I think feed back regarding transactions here are important for other
future buyer/sellers transactions with forum members.

On this subject, A friend of mine who is helping me beef up the rear suspension and drivetrain on my Blue 69 has recommended I search down a Spicer or Rockwell 1350 "racing" U-joint for the new beefed up half shafts I'm having built. I have looked on their URL but haven't been able to find one of that description. Anyone heard of them or have any source info?

Bull Shark,
I believe the solid U joints are considered the heavy duty vs. the ones with a grease fitting.
I'm under the inference the zerk fitting hole becomes the weak spot when twisted real hard.

Yes, I have heard this, but he tells me that the real racing joints are different in that they have a much beefier look, almost machined look vs standard??? Also they are not needle bearing I'm told??? Sorry don't mean to hijack thread but I'm clueless on this "racing U-Joint"

Hey no hi jack issues with me.
This is how we learn.

I would post this ? on a new thread and wait for our drag racers to respond as they would know for sure what's out there.

65mako, AJRotham run em pretty hard they would know or Jebby.
They all build to go fast.
