The 68 was originaly a 437/390 car it is now a clone L-88 but it has not been built "exactly" like a L-88, it has the hood and the carb attachment from the intake down it is still a 390hp car.
The car has been painted but still needs to be finsihed!
The 69 however is an original 427/390 IT has the Original block!
It is a convertible with factory side pipes, it however needs a total going through and the way I see it im going for the 69 vert hopefully the seller will wait untill I get back to sell it, (I just havea felling Im on my way to Iraq)
If I got the 69 I would totaly restor this beauty to what she once was then move on to another project.
For some reason I enjoy working on my vettes when I got my Z06 all I did was drive it it didnt feel right. I need a project and this one will be unbelivable!
**************************************** ********************
I have a couple of cars Im looking at one is a 68 BB coupe the other is a 69 BB convertible both 4-speed cars
Tell me what you would buy
The 68 is all there great paint and interior but the motor needs lower end work (owner said is making noise)
It is also a L-88 clone
unless the owner states different and with some proof, I looked at the pictures he has and it has a lot of discrepancies if it is an actual one of 80 cars!
But it looks sweet!
The 69 is all there it is a matching numbers car the motor is rebuilt but the car needs it all and I mean everything paint interior crome! It is esentially a basket case (which I want)
what do you think is the better car.
Im thinking the 69 is the better car becasue I am looking for a good project
What is a L-88 clone really worth other than saying you have one? its not like it will comend a higher price if you were to sell it??? maybe it would but hell
Im just looking for some opinions hereanything you say is welcome
you wont hurt my feelings!
IMO im willing to bet that the 68 and 69 need the same effort of work involved. Even tho the 69 will need more money in parts, the same amount of laber will be used on bolth cars.
Plus a matching #'s BB conv car can bring a premium on the open market.
good luck
Buy the best Corvette you can afford. Basket case may end up costing you huge dollars.
Its not about the money Its I have an itch and want to get one that needs work Ill be doing everything myself and I have a good friend that paints corvettes and Id have him do that if I wanted it to be NRCS correct other wise Id paint it my self thats the big scary price tag alot of people stray from I dont have that problem.
But I would love to have that l-88
Alot depends on the price but I would rather pay less for a non#'s matching car that is in better shape and build it the way I want it than have to worry about originality plus have to put tons of money for new parts, paint etc.
It really comes down to price. How much are they asking?
'68 will cost alot more in parts than a 69. there are alot of one year parts for a 68. take to corey68, im pretty sure he has speant a large amount of dough on his ride.
I'm probably going against the grain, but I'd never pay for pretty good paint and interior, regardless of what kind of car it is.
Chances are you're going to want close to if not new paint and interior, so they'll likely have to be done anyway. Costs just as much to replace crappy as pretty good.
Hard to beat the 'vert, but I know some folks that love the uniqueness of the '68.
go with the convertible, jesus. I can't even see the decision, allways, allways, allways, allways ,allways, allways, choose the convertible....allways!!!!!And if there were some in this rock i would have one but there was'nt so i dont, but i wish i did
I like the coupes, especially if it has a removeable rear window. Almost as open as the convertible, but with tops on seems less noisy than with top up. Hard top convertibles are cool though.
What constitutes an L-88 clone, the hood? They are easy to find aftermarket. If you are going to build up the motor, take the 69 454 over the 68 427, you get 27 more cubes, and you can get 500 HP with aftermarket parts, similar to the L-88. And lastly, always chose the convertible!!! Nothing beats cruising on a nice day with the top down, it is much more open feeling than t-tops, even with the removable window, and I've had both. With the top down, it is very quiet. Joe
I didnt quote the owner exactly but he says the paint is new and the car needs to be finished, look at the engine bay its not a L-88 he has added those parts it may be fun but???
I say go for the '69. I would much rather build a car myself and put the parts that I want to on it. That way you know what you've done and how reliable it will be. Besides, you said you were looking for a project. Don't buy a car that isn't a project unless you really like it. The '68 sounds really cool but you can add those parts to the '69 and the '69 is a vert . I think the '69 wins in most categories.
A paint job alone will cost more than a complete engine rebuild.
A complete interior will cost at least $1200, and that doesnt include any labor
Id go with that 68
And the 68 doesnt have to many 68 unique parts. The only 68 parts that is not available right now thru aftermarket folks is the door lock mechanisms /ignition switch (back part)/and the little crossed flags on the dash plate. The interior light lamp lens (coupes) where not available, but are now. Many 69-72 parts will fit right in palce
I restored my 68. Id have to say, with C3's, cosmetics cost way more than mechanical stuff
If you dont beleive me, go over that 69, and list what you need. thsn get a catalog and start adding the $$ up. Then remember that doesnt include any labor (if you dont do it yourself)
Then add about 3-6K for a paint job
The math will speak for itself
The 68 got a bad rap back when due to shake out probs wth a major design change. Any of those have been corrected by now from previuos owners
I love my 68, and put more miles/long trip on it than most C3 owners
IMO, I would never buy a car off of ebay since you can't drive it and inspect it before you buy. That said, I think the price on the 68 is high for an NOM coupe ($11k with the reserve not met and a day left) considering there is alot left to do and you may not have all of the parts. The wiper door is not there and it has a long L88 hood. If you put the wiper door back you will need a new hood and paint match. I paid $11.5k for mine as you see it and everything was there. You never posted pics of the 69 or its price but IMO if it is between these cars and you said you want a project, I'd go with the 69 IF the price is (I hope!) much cheaper. You also didn't say what you plan to do with it; restore it to stock or mod it? The only disadvantage is the 69 is matching #s so if you want to mod it, put the original engine on a pallet and pop another BB in there. Regardless, the 69 will be worth much more due to #s and vert once you restore it. Does the 69 also have the sidepipes? You may want to continue to look.
Since I've had my '68, I made all the '69 upgrades (wiring harness, larger wheels, ect.) But what I LOVE about the '68 is what makes it unique, the bottons on the door, the wipers and my fav the key on the dash.
I say go for the '68, better shape and less work. The parts aren't THAT much more $$$.
