Default Alternator overcharging?

I think I've discovered what's been killing my battery. I got a new battery and installed it in the car and checked the voltage at the battery and saw 12.5 volts per my volt meter. I have the same voltage on the positive post on the alternator. I started the engine and saw the voltage was 16.7 at the battery and the same on the alternator. As I checked the battery I saw it boil over so I immediately shut down the engine. My car is a 68 and has the external voltage regulator. The alternator is new, but the voltage regulator is not. Could it be that my voltage regulator needs replacing?

GM charging systems operate between 13.6 to 14.2vdc with engine running. T

No, I didn’t know that. When I first got the car running I checked the voltage and it was only 12.2 volts and now it’s well over 16 almost 17. I’ll watch the video and try it. I just don’t want to fry another battery. Thanks.

I watched the video and adjusted the regulator for 13.9 volts. All is well now. Thanks Melwff.
