All I did was take starter off to adjust since it was acting up sometimes. Loosend the fasteners to shroud/plate but decided not to take off so tightened back up. Put starter back in, no shims, started engine for 2 seconds and every thing seemed fine. This morning start the engine and something is rubbing on the flywheel loud but tinny/light sounding like the shroud rubbing. Don't understand, didn't even move shroud. Any thoughts?
It's probably the inspection cover. You have to make sure the fingers are installed properly on the oil pan or they will rub. Drove me crazy when I rebuilt me engine. It sounded like someone was banging a tin drum. Bad thing is you may have to remove the starter again to get it right. Good luck.
yeah, on my '81, there is a stamped sheetmetal shield that the starter fits into. last time i had mine out, it was all tweaked and i didn't straighten it out properly. when i put it back on it didn't fit properly and was further back than it should have been. normally, it didn't cause a big problem but if i was on the clutch for a while, like heavy traffic or parade, it would rub and make a ticking sound that got worse the longer i was on the clutch. i pulled it all back apart. the thing is mostly flat but has two 'fingers' to keep it in the correct location. the main part is supposed to fit in that rolled lip of the rear main seal in the oil pan. the fingers do stick inside but they have to 'pinch' that lip to keep it from flexing or moving and getting into the crank flange.
my guess is that your sheild just got tweaked at some point during starter R&R and it is pushed back into the crankshaft flange. give that a try.
Thanks guys, I'll re-do it tonight and look for those fingers. I did wiggle that cover sheild around trying to rotate it about driver side fastener but it never did come out and rotate, so I must of undid these fingers. The flywheel still seems too far back to get near it though.
Yeah you're right, I had to drive with banging sound and when I got back and took starter out again, plate was all ate up from crank end fitting. Didn't look like any damage to anything else so left plate off for 1 day and will get new plate today(hopefully). Lesson learned: if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
