After recently discovering that the non-original 350 engine in my 69 coupe (originally a 350/350) is a lowly 160 hp van engine, I have somehow convinced my wife that I should replace it with a "proper" power plant (God, she is great!). Anyway, since I am putting my car away for the winter this weekend, I plan to start looking for a replacement SB. Because I am not an engine mechanic, I will be looking for as complete an engine as can be found, and I would prefer to go with a new crate engine. Funding is not unlimited for this project. Any suggestions???? Thanks
Here's an alternate suggestion: There are a couple of shops in Wisconsin that have massive supplies of correct older blocks. They'll build a correct engine to whatever level you want to go, all the way to dead right date codes, casting numbers, and stamping. (if you want to go that far) Why don't you buz them and see how the cost compares to a crate motor. I think one is Classic Engines and another is Engines Ltd. I can't remember which one is which, but the one I've used usually has a very long list of blocks in the Corvette parts section in Hemmings. If this idea intrigues you at all, I can probably find the one that I've bought a block or two from. I think his name is Randy and I believe he's at Classic, but I could be wrong. I'll look if you're interested.
Any idea of how much horsepower you want? Also, don't over look your driving charateritics, do you cruise a lot or do you like to drop the hammer at every chance? That and the amount of $ you want to spend are needed to determine a good fit.
Although I do not do a lot of tire burning when I drive, I would like to get back into the range of the original engine (350/350). I would not rule out a rebuilt, just not sure how safe that is when a brand new engine buys me a 12 month warantee, etc. I am open minded about this.
The ZZ4 is hard to beat and hits the 350 hp you are looking for. Do a search and you will find a ton of places selling it and it comes with GM's 3 yr/ 36 mile warranty. There is a write up on intalling one in a c-3 in the Tech Section.
