I have to disagree that corvette kept its true essence from the beginning. The first few years the corvette was a dog and almost did not make it. It took a few guys very committed to the project to keep it afloat. On the contrary the mustang sold like hotcakes from the beginning and has never stopped. It was an every mans sporty car with a ton of engine and transmission choices. Every car gave in to the 70's emmission laws even the vettes. I know, I have a stock 77 that will not pull itself out of its own way. I have a 67 fastback shelby clone that is a real runner. It gets a lot of attention and questions at local cruises. All that said, they are two very different cars and cater to different crowds, so all the comparisons do not make sense anyway. I like driving the stang so I have room for the kids, (plus its heavily modded) but theres nothing like taking the tops of the vette and cruising. The not being able to pull itself out of the way thing should be taken care of before spring. Anyway, my point really is they are both cool cars and I appreciate both of them for their differences. If they were the same, I would only own one.

Re: I'm gonna be sick (mp77)
I had a '66 stang years ago and enjoyed it. My dad and my two brothers restored three of them, but had five total. three 66s one 65 vert. and one 641/2.Three had 200 ci straight sixes, one a 289 that my youngest brother still has ,and the 641/2 had a 260 v-8 that would run like a motha. We were in our late teens and could do most of the work ourselves, fun times and learned alot about cars.... but I always wanted the Vette. Got the Vette. Happy happy happy. :chevy
Mustangs are cool no doubt, but there success has more to do with Carroll Shelby and Steve Mcqueen then any Ford engineering skills.
The Mustang's success had much more to do with being one of the first (many say THE first) widely available, budget priced car with a BIG option list. You could buy a 6cyl stripper, or a loaded V8, with as much (or little) luxury or performance equipment as you wanted and could afford.
As for Bullitt, supposedly "the best car chase scene of all time" according to the mustang rags, the technical errors made it pretty lame to me. Maybe these guys haven't seen any movies made since 1968?
if i had a 77 mustang would i have as good looking a car?
You might, I do (actually, it looks better than the vette does right now). When I was using mine for a driver, I got lots of comments. Most people haven't seen a '77 Mustang for a very long time.
