I’m sure this has been covered and I tried digging through L88 posts but cant seem to find any information. My situation is I’m mocking up body pieces right now on my stripped out 69 covertible after doing a body off on the Chasis and drivetrain. I have 454 block with Victor Jr intake and Fitech EFI and L88 hood with open air assembly attached. I dont have the L88 air cleaner assembly and before I got on was a) trying to see if this combo would even fit under the hood, b) if it did see if there was a cheaper alternative than $180 for L88 air cleaner.

A) I fit an edelbrock 43662 14” air cleaner assembly on there. I put the 14” air filter in the hood and it still have about 1/4” space so it moves around a little in there. With the edelbrock assembly (about 1/2” drop I think) it is too high. I replaced that base assembly with Allstar ALL26092 drop base (which is 1.750” drop) and it seems to fit fine with just laying the hood on top. Problem is I cant see how restrictive I am being or if that should be fin with the open back in the L88 hood?

B) Is there a better/cheaper alternative to the L88 air cleaner assembly? I’m building a resto mod L88 so originality is no problem or would it just be simpler to get the L88 assembly? Has anyone built or bought something else for the L88 hood to make it work? Also worried about not having the flame arrestor there in case of backfire.

you can get those air cleaner bases as low as $50 to $60 bucks. I have your combo on a small block but I dont have info on a big block
