Default Anyone with a 502 please read...

I have a 502 in my '72. I am having one heck of a time finding a hood that will fit.

I have talked with one member who has a 502 in his '72 and his measures a full inch lower in the engine bay than mine. We think we are identical in our equipment, intake and air cleaner. He is at 4.5 inches from the top of the air cleaner to the inside edge of the fender drip rails. Mine is 5.5". Same intake and dropped 3" air filter.

Is there anyone who can take a few measurements for me to compare to? Drip rails to bell housing, anywhere we can compare numbers.

I'm at the point I will have to go to a low intake like the torker II which will crap out the 502 in performance.

I'm open to any suggestion.

Thanks

502 is same block dimensions as 65 396 right thru all big blocks ever used in vettes. His motor is probably in there correctly and you probably have incorrect or cobbed-together motor mounts.
Or you are mistaken about your intake. What intake do you have? I have a 502 on engine stand. I can throw a pair of heads and intake on and do some quickly measurements. I have a victor jr, mid-80's copy of L88-LS6 and a low-rise truck intake.

I'm supposed to have the intake that came with the ZZ502. That would be a GM 12363407. It is supposed to have a carb height of 4.45". From my measurements it is about that.

I would like to see the numbers on the intake but the PO smoothed the intake of all the cyl #'s as well as the PN before he had it coated.

I have a March serpentine system like the other member has and I only have about 1" between the lower pulley and the cross member.

I agree, check your motor mounts. 69-72 BB cars with A/C had a "V" looking spacer between block and the motor mount for some reason. You may have kept that when installing 502??? Otherwise maybe a new hood!

I'm running a performer RPM manifold with a sniper throttle body. Some sort of aftermarket air cleaner with a drop base. I'm getting a measurement of 4" from center of top of air cleaner to drip rail.

The standard intake that is on a 502/502 is the same as the Edelbrock RPM. That intake with a 2" drop base air cleaner (LT1, L88 etc etc) and a 3" element will clear under an L88 hood...

I had an RPM AIR GAP fit under an L88 hood with 3/16" clearance using the above air cleaner and filter. I was also using the Energy Suspension Poly engine mounts. They do settle down about 1/4" over time.

Maybe get hold of the other guy you were comparing measurements with and compare top of valve cover to drip rail heights just in case you have a mount height issue. Check that they are the same valve covers, though. Or maybe from top of water pump, something like that. Lay a straightedge across and measure height from there, something like that.

Is your L88 hood the standard one or, as Eckler's calls, it the L88 Style Tall Hood?

Been fooling with it today and got the top of the air cleaner at 4.5" to the drip rails!!!

This might fit the regular L88 hood?????

Mine is a 4" L88 hi-rise hood from Vanacors. They are out of business now.... Its at least 1.5" taller then a regular L88....

I'm not sure on your 4.5" clearance.....Mine is WAY taller then that..

This is with an RPM Air gap, 1" carb spacer and a 4" element on a 2" drop base air cleaner.

ajrothm's hood is taller than the Ecklers L88 Style Tall Hood (which I have). 4.5" to the drip rails will not fit under Ecklers..... 4" is the max you can fit......believe me, I have tried. Ecklers 4" equals Vanacor's 5"......they must use different rulers!

Can you post a picture of your L88 Ecklers Tall Hood? From the side and from the drivers seat? No one around here has one to look at.

Never mind! I found your album. Is that the tall hood in your album picture?

No, that is the regular Ecklers L88 hood (old one). I'll have to take some new pics.

Default Found New Pics

I found some pics on file from in the body shop with the new hood. This is Ecklers L88 Style tall hood. They advertise it as 4" clearance.....the clearance is exactly 4" above the drip rails (at the air cleaner, not at the cowl). This is 1 1/2" higher than the standard L88 hood. Compare the pics with my album (or avatar) pics and ajrothm's hood.
