I want to put together an L88 angine for my '68 (to make a clone), and I thought that this engine would be great. BUT it scares me that it says "short block." I'm sure he meant big block (he mentions numerous other big block parts), though I'm hesitant because I don't think you can trust someone who thinks an L88 is a short block. Please let me know what you guys think.
Did the L88 come standard with a 427 ci -435HP? because I found a block for sale for $2,250.00. Best price I've found besides this almost complete engine...
Short block means just the lower end, no heads etc. If I remember right, the L88 was actually rated (underrated) at 430HP, not 435. The 435 was the tripower.
[edit] Though now that I went and looked at the ad, he says he has heads, manifolds, etc, so go figure. But anyway, "short block" has nothing to do with big block or small block.

What he said. It does say short block but then states you get heads with it, most be the short block is assembled but the head are not on it. Wonder what they mean by 'new'?
The terms are a bit confusing! As mentioned above, the term "Short block" and "Long block" refer to how complete the engine is, not to be confused with "Smallblock" and "Bigblock". Now, somebody give us the definition of long block and short block pls! :) I remember thinking..." so how long is a long block???? " MJ
A short block is usually a block crank rods and pistons assembled. Sometimes it can include the cam and timing gears.
A long block is all above plus the heads assembled and all the valve gear installed. No manifolds (intake or exhaust). Nothing else. Sometimes an oil pan is included and a timing chain cover. Depends on who is assembling the long block.
Go to http://www.yenko.net and post in the wanted section that you would like to purchase a '68 L-88. Somebody there will help you.
That doesn't look like a very good deal. Notice that the heads are incomplete ("no valves" is stated, probably no springs, rocker arms or studs either).
Thanks everyone! I'm not too concerned with the fact that the valves aren't included 3500 for L88 block/heads/carb/manifold? That's a pretty good deal if you ask me... BUT I am posting on yenko, thanks for that link as well..
I didn't realize what the terms short and long block meant. Thanks, I'm learning!
