Just reassembled everthing including freshly painted oil pan and now my PS linkage scrapes the hell out of it! :mad Anybody got any suggestions what I did wrong and if I can fix without having to go rent a pickle fork to do it over?
I would imagine that you tightened all of the joints down and pinned them.
You can sometimes remove the cotter pins, loosen the nut, and tap the joints loose. I like to get a bogus nut or 2 and thread them on the joint and leave them so they cover all of the threads and try tapping it back out with a hammer. This way you don't screw up the threads. I have a Moroso kicked out oil pan on my 69 BB and don't have the problem. What part of the linkage is hitting the pan? Is it a stock pan?
Everything is stock and worked fine before I removed it to change the rear main seal. It scrapes where the relay rod attaches to the ram cylinder case. The relay rod faces up toward the oil pan instead of the front of the car which I guess is the way it should be. I've already had to retap one of the shafts where the cotter pin goes through it from trying to get a bad castle nut off so I'm leary of beating on them.
You can pickup a pickle fork pretty cheap.
May be your only option it sounds like.
I would have to look at mine to see what way it faces.
Can you rotate the cylinder to make it bolt in the other way or towards the front like you think it should to test it?
All you have to do is: Space the ram down from the drivers side frame where it's held on by 4 bolts.
I found a 4 inch X 4 inch by 1/2 inch thick aluminum block. Any kind of spacer would work. I drill four holes in the @ placement. I drilled them larger so they didn't have to be exact. Then i just bought four longer fine thread bolts. Works like a charm
Tough to say exactly, Mark, BUT if it was OK before, and the only thing you did was remove "stuff" to change the seal, something is re-installed incorrectly. You mention the relay rod....facing up? Should face forward. Are you sure you didn't accidently put something in "bass-ackwards"? Chuck
If I remember correctly, if you have power steering, you must attach your tie rod ends to the steering arms on the knuckles in the forward hole. In other words, the shortest arm and the quickest steering ratio. This will move your linkage forward in the car and may provide more clearance.
The rear hole (longest arm) in the steering arm is for manual steering only.
