Transmission guys!?!? Turbo 350 shifting problems.
20 years ago [maybe 2000 miles of use as the car is in storage for years at a time] I swapped out the 2 speed automatic in my 66 GTO for a Turbo 350. The 350 got re-clutched, resealed and a shift kit installed at that time.
Since day one [20 years ago] This car basically skip shifts second gear.
Generally no matter how hard or softly you are accelerating, car stays in first the correct amount of time then shifts into second for less that a second and then goes directly into third.
If you manually shift it all the gears are there....While the car is out of storage this time, I'm on a mission to fix this once and for all. I'm going to venture one guess, since it was never right...guessing the builder messed up something with the valve body?
Any suggestions?

what process did you follow to adjust the shift cable at the carburetor?

Actually those work off the gas pedal...and yep, it's right. I think I'm going to replace the governor to see if that changes anything...

Yes I was going to recommend checking the governor and make sure the slide valve in the governor is not hung up. If all 3 gears work normally in manual, then that tells me its the governor or a valve body issue. Usually its best to just buy a new governor from a trans shop for $30-40...
Also check the vacuum modulator, but usually, if the modulator is bad or adjusted wrong, it won't shift out of first at all.
Although I'm no transmission guy.

Gas Pedal
A TH400 uses a switch on the gas pedal, a TH350 to my knowledge uses a cable that is adjusted at the carburetor. So are you sure you have a TH350?

either way it's not throttle pressure. I already went down that road...at any gas pedal location it virtually skips second gear. Shift RPM never changes or varies.
Even if the cable was unhooked, it would still have second gear.
It's not an adjustment thang...something is stuck. If the governor isn't he issue, I'll replace the valve body.
I talked to the guy who built the transmission years ago today, he didn't much like it when I suggested there was a missing ball in the VB....
