Thanks to all who replied to me on this problem. Turns out my assumption that this 383 had hydraulic lifters was wrong. After readjusting for solids ( .020 intakes, 024 exhaust) the little darling fired right up. some fine tuning to do but all in all running strong. Thanks again

Good deal...
A cheat trick on knowing if you have solids or hydraulics is to tighten the nut down... then let it sit... it's hydraulic it'll bleed off and be loose, it it's solids it won't change. Hydraulic lifters will bleed off when under pressure, solids won't.
