Hey guys just wanted to let ya'll know that I called Safelite this morning and they quoted me $199 installed by there mobile service. This sounds good to me. II asked the rep about there knowledge of the older windsheild installs and she ensured me that they have done this type of install many times and that there techs were trained to do the job correctly. For this price I don't want to mess with it. Just thaught I would share this. Any comments?
Since Safelite is a chain, you are going to have to depend on what you hear locally as to how competent the install guys are. I have used them several times with my vehicles and had good results.
Another thing, windshield install isn't exactly rocket-science, if your frame is in good shape and doesn't have any rust. It should be a quick and easy job for any competent windshield installer. Most of the times these guys are good and can knock out a install like this in 30 minutes or less. Just make sure you have all your molding and clips handy so the installer can reinstall it for you.
take very detailed "before" pictures, so if they mess up your trim you have proof. Sometimes the new glass isnt shaped correct, which in turn would make your trim not fit tight.......Pictures!!!
a picture is worth a thousand words!!!!!!!!! :)
opps, i didnt see that you car was in "being built" condition,,,,,still throw the moldings on while he is there, so if the glass is not shaped right he can take it back. I took my impala to have new glass put in and the glass they used a cheaper brand company and it didnt fit good at all,, i took it back and had them put in a ppg glass which fit great.
Safelite did my 77's windshield...would not do it in my driveway, insisted I leave it with them for 2 days. Top notch job, no leaks after 3 years and they even worked on the windshield frame a bit as corrosion was begining...all is well and I have nothing but praise for them...my .02
Have your moldings handy & make sure the molding overlap (w/s side to side) & gaps (w/s height) are good BEFORE the windshield sets. The urethane is pliable enough to make side to side adjustments before it sets completely.
The windsheild frame has been replaced already and all of my trim is already off the car. They will stick this stuff back on for me? I have already test fitted everything so I know the trim is correct. I have another post out there concearning the top of the frame where there is an open channel. When I removed the chrome It was full of some type of gooey sealer. Is this factory? Also the side moldings were bonded together and then bonded and screwed to the frame. Is this factory as well? If so what was used.
As for getting them to install the windsheild I figure $199 is cheap enough for me not to mess with it.
It might be tough for Wade to convince his Ins Co that his WS was cracked
while driving down the street.
Wade, If they do the trim install, I would definitely hang out while they do it -
to make sure they seal all the mouldings properly. Do you have an AIM ?
Get the page handy that shows the correct placement of the sealers,
in case your installer is not sure.
I've always heard that most insurance co. will pay 100% for w/s replacement
I see you're in the Sunshine State. I recall that the Florida Insurance Commission required insurers to waive the comprehensive coverage deductible on the windshield if damaged by a covered peril. At least that was the practice when I lived there. Not so in Illinois. Read your policy and attached endorsements before you make a claim to be sure. :seeya
