Z-06 / L-88 debate.......
Muhammad Ali helped me to understand the dynamics involved in these constant debates about the Z-06/L-88. "Say what?" .....you say.
Well "The Greatest" was in Toronto last night for a Canadian Football League game where he was honoured at half-time by, not only his many fans, but by Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, George Chuvalo, Mats Sundin, Daniel Igali, Warren Moon and current heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis.

As always, there was speculation about who would win in a fight between today's heavyweights and Ali in his prime.........(or to focus the debate on our topic here on the Corvette Forum - between today's Z-06 and the L-88 in its prime with headers and today's tires).
No matter who was talking, or doing the bragging, the eyes told the tale. Because whenever any of them talked about Ali, their eyes sparkled, their breathing quickened, their hands were animated. After all, they were talking about "The Greatest" and they knew it.
And deep down, we all know it don't we. In his prime, Ali could take Lennox Lewis without breaking a sweat.......dancing like a butterfly.......stinging like a bee!
Lewis knows this truth as well. What do you suppose Ali was whispering in Lewis' ear last night?

"I can whip your butt boy, and you know I can.......by the way, nice hair. ;) "
This story applies perfectly to the on-going discussions about the Z-06 and L-88. "I can whip your butt boy, and you know I can.......by the way, nice C5 butt. ;) "
"As Muhammad Ali stood at the microphone, still but for a mild trembling around his edges, the famous chant went up: 'Ali, Ali, Ali.'
Players from the Toronto Argonauts and the Ottawa Renegades joined in, gathering around the stage set up at midfield for the half-time ceremony honouring the former heavyweight champion. They pumped their helmets in rhythm to the chanting."
End of story. The L-88 is The Greatest. :smash:

One of the great benefits of working with machinery is that an L88 can be maintained, rebuilt, or even created that will work as well today as when first introduced in the late 60's. Unfortunately this is not the case for world class athletes. Many people do resist comparing former athletes with today's group because a head to head comparison as each was in their prime is not possible. Many feel this is true for cars too. It does not apply to cars!

Hate to say it but Tyson would/would have crushed Ali, both in their prime. As would the Z06 against anyone in its weight class, or cubic inch class in this case. The L-88 is the King of Vettes by tech knockout, the EPA standards being the tech part.

Oooohhhh bold statement! I'm not disagreeing, I was a huge Tyson fan early in his career. I do think he came on in an era when there wasn't much else in the division and the guys he did fight were typically so scared they almost fell down before they were hit. Question is, could Tyson have "caught" him in the first 4 rounds?

I would have to agree with this one.
The L88 is the Greatest, and always will be.

 I prefer the ZL-1... (L-88 with aluminum block)
As for the Ali/Tyson debate......Tyson wouldn't stand a chance. Ali was way too quick and all Tyson had was one punch you're out. Tyson would have never cought Ali with that punch. JMHO seeing as I have seen both fight in their prime.

The young Tyson was a furious beast. Then he got older, bigger, stronger, slower and emotionaly more twisted. The sooner he caught Ali, the sooner he would have been KOed. Ali took the "Best Shot from Liston, Frazier, Terrell, Foreman, Shavers, Norton "broken jaw", Bonavena, Chavaullo. And a beating from Holmes that broke my heart. Every one of these men "ex Holmes" hit harder than any opponent Tyson ever had!

Ali beat George Foreman in his prime and Foreman was a monster compared to Tyson. Foreman was bigger and hit harder than Tyson and Foreman terrrorized some world class boxers, not the tomato cans that Tyson did.
I saw Foreman win the title from Michael Moorer in 1994. I always wondered why Tyson didn't fight Foreman during his comeback. It would have been the biggest money fight out there. After seeing Foreman land that right hand, I know why. Tyson would have gotten his head handed to him. :boxing Classic
