Yes, original tube will fit with the spacer, at least mine did. You only need to pop off one of the vent plugs. Just match the one that is out on your original fan .

I also pulled my vent tube off the evaporator box and blew it out with compressed air in attempts to clean everything as good as possible.

Thanks for the advice. I’m hoping to have time tomorrow to try all this out. My machinist finished the spacer.

My new spacer!!

Hmmm that spacer looks like a good place for a 3d printed part.

My thoughts exactly! Do you have a 3D model of it, or even just a 2D drawing of it (assuming it is a straight extrusion with a few holes).

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't have any files for the spacer. It is not a 3D printed part. I took the C4 blower motor and some of the old threads explaining the operation to a local machine shop and they CNC milled the part out of some left over 1" phenolic they had from an old job. Since he had the setup and programming complete, he said it would be no problem running additional parts, so I'm having him do one in 3/4" as well and will try them both and see which one shows more improvement. I will report my findings here!

A friend of mine had a new blower for a 1998 one ton Chevy pickup sitting on a shelf that he never used. It has the same bolt pattern as our C3's blower. It has the same single connector also. It is a bigger motor and squirrel cage like the C4 blower. I mounted it on my car with a spacer I made.

How thick is the spacer you made? Did it make a big difference?

I haven't got the car running yet, so haven't run the blower. I'm sure it will move more air. I think it was 3/4" if I remember correctly. A lot of times on these old cars, the air flow is inhibited by dirty fins in the heater core and AC evaporator. You might want try blowing air backwards through the unit while you have the blower off and see what comes out.

Thanks Mike! I intend to try that and install the thicker ground wire while I'm in there!

Here is a link to a spacer scale drawing. I don't know if it is correct, but it is quite precise.

I am in the middle of it. A broken Freon hose led to my discovering a mouse nest in my evaporator which led to my complete renovation of the system. It's all apart, right? May as well.

I have a new fan from a C4. I figured out the wiring. I'm now working on painting some things and restoring finishes. I'm very close to reassembling everything. Of course in Corvette land, "very close" can mean a lot of things.

Please let us know how it goes...The a/c blower is one of my few gripes in my C3 living here in Alabama. Car drives great, and the air is cold, just doesn't move enough of it on these 100F + days.

Thanks again for your info!

I have. I think the blower is working as it should...I'm just spoiled and want more. I also have a 2017 Corvette and the C3 on HIGH blows about like the C7 does when it's showing 3 or so bars...

Same thoughts here in Texas! Even with a an new AC system and a C4 blower, the amount of air thru the vents is my very impressive in my 78. On my thing i haven't touched is the evaporator. Cleaned mine out as best as I could when installing the fan motor with compressed air. Sounds almost like engine has to come out to pull the evaporator. Yuck!

Also, I used a 3/4" spacer cut from a scrap piece of board. Painted it black and sealed it up. Wish I had a nice piece like yours! And this WOULD be a good candidate for a 3d printer.

i found those drawings for the spacer online a few years ago, was always on my list of things to do.

i ended up doing the heavier ground wire trick first, as i would have to order a motor/fan assembly from over there.

dug them out the other week after prompting from this post, will attempt to get around to drawing up a 3D model and getting a mate to print it for me.

i made a smog pump fan, and that turned out well. so now will try a spacer, then........

could do with better airflow in our heat down here.

I ordered the later generation fan/blower (GM ACDelco 15-80182).

Vent Hold Location is Different - The vent hole for the blower motor is on the opposite side from the OEM 1968 blower in my car. (See picture below. New motor on left with pencil protruding from vent; old motor on right with original tube.) I cannot find a way to reorient the motor in the housing. Has anyone hit this? Did you route a pipe around the housing? If so, what did you use?

Shape of Housing Different, Template Generally Larger - I also printed the scale drawing from the other site with link above. It is laying on top of the old motor (on the right). One can see the template is more pointed at the bottom (to fit the new blower on the left); I will enlarge the template to provide coverage for these rounded areas from the old blower in case there is potential air leak. Also, the template in general is a little larger than the new blower. I don't know if that is a design difference in the blower I'm using or some other accommodation. After I have it together I will reduce the spacer to fit using a belt sander.
