Default Question about the chrome shielding over the distributor

I'm new to Vette's, and I was wondering if the chrome shield can be used on aftermarket distributors? I have a new Mallory HEI distributor and coil on my L-82, and I really like the looks of the stock chrome shield, can I still use one?

What do they attach too?

My 71' has the chrome shield and it attaches to two brackets held in place by a couple of the manifold bolts. You can still buy the brackets.

I have never seen one on a aftermarket dist.

If you take em off the originial dist. it is almost impossible to get them back on. That is why most of them have been gone for years on these old cars.

Tater74Roadster

I think it should fit since my HEI unit has a Petronix top that added 2" height and my buddies MSD was the same height.

Mine has come off and on several times.
The brackets and shield do not connect to the distributor in any way,
so the size of your new distributor will determine whether it will fit back on.
My guess is - no problem.

When reinstalling the shielding, start all the bolts, but leave them loose.
When all the bolts are in place, tweek the position of the pieces and
tighten her up.

Most folks choose NOT to run the long wires down through the channels.
Instead, they do like Stewart has, by buying "standard" wires and running
them in looms. I like this idea. When I pulled the wires out of my shielding
channels, the wires were so soaked with oil that they were about 50%
thicker than they should be. When you pull the old ones out, simply cut
the wire ends off and yank them through. Getting originals back through
is an exercise for the student.
