Okay...I have a 1972 Stingray with a 454. According to my data plate by the shifter I have 8.5-1 compression ratio and 495 ft lbs of torque!!!
I looked in the Zip Catalog and they show a replacement data plate that says 455 ft lbs of torque!!!
According to my owners manual and every other manual I only have 390 ft lbs of torque. So what is up?????
page62: yeah...I figure it's bogus. But even Zip has the wrong info on their replacement plate :(
Paul: Page is referring to the data plate not being available for '79...not the L82 ;) As far as I can tell data plates stopped for the C3 in '76. At least, that's the last replacement ones available at Zip.
And you need to add a big block to that stable!!! :D

Deputy-yes, you're correct-did'nt even know what I was thinking about :yesnod:
Missed a beautiful '74 454/automatic roadster, no A/C, no power windows or any options, just ps and pb besides the bigblock. It was Silver, Black Vinyl interior with hardtop, 81,000mi but very clean and well maintained for $10,500!!! Oh well, maybe another one in the future???
:yesnod: Yup. Paul and I share the same data plate. In actual fact, the '79 L-82 had a 8.9:1 compression ratio. Also, notice how the later-model data plates have no HP or torque figures...wonder why? :D
MNJack: ouch! You are BAD! Hehehe...I remember when guys used to change the cubic inch emblems on the sides of their muscle cars to smaller numbers to crush the competition and larger numbers to impress their buddies. Nowadays, with the litre stuff, it wouldn't matter because it would take forever to translate litres into cubic inches :D
Thanks Turbo! I didn't know they changed the torque ratings from gross to net too. So the plate in my car is wrong and the one from Zip is correct.
Guess I'll add that to my list of "must buys" :jester

I did that! I had a '68 Firebird with a 455 in it that had 350 emblems on the hood. Worked like a charm, because all the Indian engines looked the same. You had to be careful though; some folks would get very irate if they found out they had been suckered.
I had a buddy that had a '70 Dodge Challenger (Nash Bridges car). He changed the emblems from 440 magnum to 383 four barrel. Trouble was, the car was a pig, and we told him it should have been changed to 318 four barrel ;)
