Hello all, was hoping you guys could help me out. Bought my 78 Vette a few months back and fixing small things here and there. One thing that was driving me crazy is my tach would jump all over the place while going down the road I'm talking from reading 0 RPM's to 5000 while cruising down the highway going 60MPH. I did some research and it sounded like what I had going on could be fixed by replacing the tachometer filter. I did this and now it doesn't jump all over the place anymore, instead it acts like it's reading about 1500RPM's below what the engine is actually turning. While sitting at idle it reads nothing but when I rev it up it will start responding, like I said I've got to rev it to around 1500 to 2000 RPMs before it reads at all. Anyone ever run into this before? Is it a easy fix or am I going to have to replace the board to the tach? Any help would be much appreciated so I can move on to the next repair lol
I have a 78 as well. Had some screwy tech issues when I first bought mine. If I recall, it wasn't tracking engine speed well .My filter had already been disconnected sometime in the past. I bought the new tech board from Willcox and it fixed everything.
I recently purchased a 75 coupe. I knew the tach didnt work when I bought it.The PO said it needed a circuit board. After reading thru a number of these threads how do you decide if the filter or board or both are at fault? Or is it best just to install both as new parts?

I believe with the new circuit board from Willcox, you no longer need a filter. I do not have one on mine.
