Default 71 Waterpump Question/Prob

Had an alt belt schred yesterday. Got me to thinking if waterpump in car is correct. This never happened before however, I don’t think alternator belt looks aligned. I read some past posts that starting in about 70, Corvette had its own short pump version. See pic of pump thats in car now. No, the dates are not correct. Also see the shredded belt. I’m not necessarily looking for a date coded waterpump. Just a correct pump that is supposed to be in the car. Thanks.

All C3's have short water pumps, earlier cars had pumps with a 5/8" pilot for the WP pulley, starting in '71 they got a 3/4" pilot. If yours has a 3/4" pilot, it is correct for '71. However check the pulley alignment with the pump bolted in place, you may need to alter the flange location on the shaft with a press or add a spacer or two behind the pulley to correct the alignment.

pulley alignment is quite possible compromised 8if pump is faulty but you have it pictured as removed, assuming the pump is good and the belt didn't just die of old age something in alignment changed.

meh u stated alt belt not wp belt. im old and entitled to be a bit dense. xd

The 330813 is the 1972 casting that should work on your 71.
The distance from the block contact surface to the top of the hub should be 5 13/16 inches.

But the casting number in the pic is 330818, not 813.

8's and 3's look a lot alike on castings. That casting ends with a 3.
There's no such water pump casting that ends with an 8.

Ok, thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure this later pump will work. I got a new belt today at Napa and will install later in the work week. I’ll post a pic of the repair. Let me know what belt looks like as far as alignment.

use a yard stick laid across the face of your pulley, to verify if they are aligned correctly and parallel.

All measurements are correct as suggested. Here are some pics.

There is some very good info in this thread regarding how to verify correct pulley alignment. Read through the post and you'll find a number of very effective ways to determine if you have an alignment issue. It isn't directly related to the engine in your car, but the methods used to verify alignment will work on any engine.
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ignment-2.html

Also don't forget that the crank pulley plays a role in verifying pulley alignment as well.

One other thing, while you have the belt off, run your fingers around all the pulley's... carefully... looking for any burrs that may have contributed to your belt's demise.

Good luck and let us know what you discover... GUSTO

Gusto....useful reading. Thanks! I also made up a pulley alignment too. Not my design, got it from another CF members post. Created from a drill bit extentsion and 2, 3/8 sockets that fit snugly over the shaft of the extension. Just slid the sockets in between the water pump pulley grooves leveling the other end of extension which lined right up with alt pulley. Kinda crude. Got an extra belt I’ll leave in car.

Paul, glad it was helpful.

Were you also able to verify the pulley alignment between the crank pulley and the water pump/alternator pulleys?

Good luck... GUSTO

Gusto....I cut a small 1/4” conduit and place on crank to water pump / alt pulley and it did line up. As far as the naked eye could see that is. I also checked smoothness of inside pulleys and all were smooth.
