Hi, I have a pair of flowmaster super 44’s on my 74, fed straight from ceramic coated short headers. The drone in the car at 1300-1800rpm is unbearable, it’s fine after, on load or not and at idle. Would sound proofing cure this? Or am I better off replacing the 44’s? It’s one piece welded so they’d need cutting off. Or could I add a centre resonator?
That won't stop the drone. I've had it too. It is unbearable on the freeway. Try switching to 40's. I just installed a pair on my '73 and they give good tone without the dreaded drone.
I have 40's on my '70 with a hopped up 355, 2-1/2" all the way back and a smaller 1-1/2" H-Pipe behind the trans. One spot of resonance from 1600-1800 rpm otherwise beautiful, you can converse on the highway, awesome sound and it does not drone.
Before you cut those mufflers off, try having an H-pipe installed. You might be surprised.
Get the biggest case turbo muffler you can under there, youll be much happier. Resonator wont get rid of the drone most aftermarkets are known for.
Doubt youll see any power loss at all.
get Pype Violators or Flowmaster 40 original NON- delta
either are my personal fave, Flowmasters have the famous purr and the Pype Violators have a deep raspy snarl
Pypes are a turbo style, far better flow than Flowmaster, but it's all about sound to me.
Pypes on my 408w, sounded great at idle, not too loud, but when you got on it on the freeway, it was insanely loud, but just cruising was barely even there, it was such a sleeper.... ruined a lot of c5 and c6's day with that car
Lots of ideas!
Does an H section make a difference? Mine are separate at the moment.
My main problem is I’m in the uk, so availability of some systems is awkward.
I can get the walker dynomax super turbo’s as mentioned above, would they be a good choice?
Going to the 40's won't help....they drone too.
As Crimson Thunder pointed out, the 50's do not drone, but they still have the nice sound of Flowmasters, I have them on my car too.
An H-pipe will tone down the sound some.
Tests show that an H or X pipe in the system will increase performance and most people state it lessens or deletes the drone.
There have been several threads on this and U-Tube videos.

Yes, they're good choice especially if you can get them local. Not sexy like Flowmasters but they'll get it done.
I had a removebable 'X' pipe on my '06 GTO, it'd take me all of 5 minutes to swap back and forth between it and straight pipes. The 'X' or 'H' will mellow it out but wont eliminate the drone.
