1980 L82 emissions label
In 68, when GM first started using the emission labels, they initially used a single letter. By 69 they were using two letters and in 80 they started using three. They even occasionally used numbers. In 1980, the emission label code for the L-82 automatic was "ADN", the Federal emission L-48 automatic was "CX", the Federal L-48 4 speed was "32", the California LG-4 (305) was "DR" and "ZW" was assigned to the L-82 4 speed, which never made it into production.
I think it was probably just a matter of GM going through the alphabet and progressively using up letters, and combinations of letters.
