Default Tail shaft height.....

I have a SBC, with 200 4r conversion......it was a stick shift car, but the 200 rear mount set on the cross support just fine.....

BUT one question about the cross support remains after all these years....that is about my infrequent highway driving, I note the shifter that is mounted to the cross support like the stick shift was.....it vibrates like hell on the freeway at say 50+ mph....I don't notice it around town so much....

SO, I need someone to please get me a measurement from UNDER the side rails just aft/rear of the cross support to the bottom edge of the driveshaft input collar (output of the trans.....

THAT way I can alter what necessary to put the shaft at same height as was from factory.....it's not important what trans is there, 350/400/muncie.....just need a straight edge supported across frame rails, and a tape measure to the bottom of output shaft.....

Thanks guys.....

Default Drive shaft angle

What you need to do is determine your drive shaft angle. There is an app for that. You want as close to 0 degrees angle as possible.

I know that, but I don't have tools/gear enough to measure it reliably, considering the diffy yoke is way in hell up there and can't be gotten too with the metal in the way.... so to get it started, since the frame is in good shape....to get the stock dimension and check out the diffy mounts too.....but the old Muncie never gave the issue, it's tail shaft fit on the frame shoe/extension out forward as did the 700 that WAS in the car....but the 200 sets on the cross/frame itself, lines up good, but I am unsure about the height/angle....

zero degrees is not the correct answer. You want to have parallel tranny output shaft and the differential input shaft parallel with @2.5 degrees of down angle

this makes the u joints work ever so slightly and cancels out harmonic buzzing in the shifter

download the digital level program to your smartphone

I have just a flip phone, not anything I can read even IF I D/L something to it.....much less know what it is....or where to find it....

So how much drop to have in the stock drive shaft length for a Muncie, as that is what is in the car now.....?? so it on the garage floor, measure floor to d/s and at other end, I can't do that...about ~6" shy of the d/s end at the diffy universal.....too boot I can't get under there with the car on the floor...

Is the car vibrating,....or just the shifter? The driveline angle being off would shake the whole car if it's off that much. The shifter is cable driven, so if you mount it to the floor instead of the cross support, the body should isolate most of the vibration. My th400 shifter is smooth a glass while cruising,...and the shifter is mounted to the driveline tunnel under the console.

Interesting in that my muncie shifter was tied to the cross support, and the extention piece going forward for the mount.....but that piece was not needed for the 200 in there now, it just sets right on the cross support directly on the holes from the factory....but it's the height I concerned with....The hurst shifter handle I have is mounted to the cross support.....

The new or modded driveshaft could be out if balance or not straight.
